Required Oregon Auto Insurance Coverage
Oregon is one of the stricter states when it comes to required coverage. Oregon law requires that you carry four types of coverage.
- Bodily Injury Coverage
- Property Damage Liability
- Personal Injury Protection
- Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury and Underinsured Motorist Coverage
Required Bodily Injury coverage is in the amount of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury to others. You must also carry Property Damage Liability in the amount of $10,000 per accident for any damage to the property of others. Since Oregon is a no-fault state, Personal Injury Protection is another required coverage. A no-fault state means that you and your passengers are covered in an accident by Personal Injury Protection coverage no matter who is at fault in an accident. It will cover up to $10,000.
Personal Injury Protection in Oregon also includes coverage for medical services that may result from injury. It also covers loss of earnings if your injuries prevent you from going back to work. Oregon law states that this coverage can begin on the 14th day of the disability and can cover up to 70% of you monthly wages not to exceed $1,250 per month for 52 weeks. If you don’t work, this coverage can give you up to $30 a day to cover essential services that you would perform but are unable to due to injury. It also starts on the 14th day of your disability. This coverage also cover funeral services up to $2,500 up to a year after the accident.
Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage means your insurance company will pay all the expenses that would normally be covered by the other uninsured or underinsured driver in the case of an accident. The amount of coverage you must have is $25,000 per person or $50,000 per accident for bodily injury caused to you or your passengers by an uninsured or underinsured motorist. This is an important coverage to have since many uninsured motorist are uninsured for financial reasons and might not have the money to help you pay for expensed.
Oregon Auto Insurance and Credit Scoring
Credit Scoring: Credit scoring or insurance scoring is a new practice. It is when insurance companies use your credit score and history as one of the determining factors when quoting you a price for insurance. Oregon is one of the states that has put limits on this sometimes controversial practice.
If you are already insured with a company, they cannot use your credit score to raise your premiums, even if your score has dropped since you were insured with them. Oregon law also states that an insurance company cannot decide to not renew your coverage based solely on your credit score. They also cannot cancel your premium due to your credit score.
Companies can use your credit score to determine if they will offer you an initial policy, but they must prove that your credit score, along with other factors, makes you a risk. According to Oregon law, an insurance company must tell you how they will use your credit information before they run a credit check. When you are shopping around for a quote, find out from the companies you are inquiring with if they use your credit information in this way.
